St. John the Baptist Fast & Penitence & Rosary

- Fasting and Abstinence -

(Dominica prima Adventus - Adventus Domini - Festum Sancti Andrea apostoli)

From the Feast Day of St. Andrew to December 24

John the Baptist fasted to prepare himself for the coming of the Messiah.

He lived in the desert, eating onlylocusts and wild honey; a very austere and challenging existence. (Matt 3:4) Jesus fasted as part preparation for his ministry.

JOYFUL MYSTERIES

MYSTERIUM GAUDIÓSA

- Daily Rosary Through the Season of Advent -

Penance, preparation, and sacrifice

"The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way:

The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

It was John who baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins."

(Mark 1:1-10).

THE ARMOR OF GOD

Eph. 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil;

for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against bands of wicked spirits in the heavenly regions.

Wherefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having wrought out all things, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having your feet shod with the readiness of the gospel of peace; over all taking up the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

And receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; through every prayer and supplication, praying at every season in spirit, and in it being watchful in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

MEMORARE - PRAYER TO MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Memorare, Coeleste Palmetum 1866

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,

implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence,

I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come;

before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions,

but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen

MEMORARE, O piissima Virgo Maria, non esse auditum a saeculo,

quemquam ad tua currentem praesidia, tua implorantem auxilia,

tua petentem suffragia, esse derelictum.

Ego tali animatus confidentia,

ad te, Virgo Virginum, Mater, curro, ad te venio, coram te gemens peccator assisto.

Noli, Mater Verbi, verba mea despicere; sed audi propitia et exaudi.

Amen.

Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation!

Actus Contritionis

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. Amen

Deus meus, ex toto corde pænitet me omnium meorum peccatorum,

Ideo firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia Tua, de cetero me non peccaturum peccandique occasiones proximas fugiturum.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PRAYER

The Raccolta, ed. 1910., #389

O GLORIOUS St John the Baptist, of those born of women the greatest of prophets; thou, though sanctified from thy mothers womb and most innocent, didst nevertheless will to retire into the desert, there to practise austerities and penance; obtain for us from our LORD the grace to be detached, at least in the affections of our hearts, from all earthly treasure, and to practise Christian mortification with interior recollection and a spirit of holy prayer.

O MOST zealous Apostle, who, without working any miracle on others, but solely by the example of thy life of penance and the power of thy words, didst draw after thee crowds, in order to prepare them to worthily receive the MESSIAH, and listen to his heavenly teaching; grant that it may be given to us also, by the example of a holy life and the practice of good works, to lead many souls to GOD, and, above all, those who have been enveloped in the darkness of error and ignorance, and led astray by vice.

UNCONQUERED martyr, who for the honour of GOD and the salvation of souls, didst, with heroic constancy, and at the cost of life itself, with stand the impious Herod, reproving him openly for his bad and dissolute life ; obtain for us a brave and generous heart, so that, overcoming all human respect, we may boldly profess our faith, and follow the teaching of our divine master JESUS CHRIST.

V/. Pray for us, St John the Baptist.
R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of CHRIST.

Let us pray.
O GOD, who hast made this day worthy of honour in the nativity of St John, grant to thy people the grace of spiritual joys, and direct the minds of all the faithful into the way of eternal salvation.

Through CHRIST our LORD.

Amen.

Annunciation - Annuncio

Luk 1:26-38

(We do the Sign of the Cross in    Faith,   Hope   and   Love    which both opens and closes the sequence of prayer)

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And he came to her and said,

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!”

But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her,

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

and you shall call his name Jesus.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;

and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,

and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever;

and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel,

“How can this be, since I have no husband?”

And the angel said to her,

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,

and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;

therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

For with God nothing will be impossible.”

And Mary said,

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

And the angel departed from her.

(We do the Sign of the Cross in    Faith,   Hope   and   Love    which both opens and closes the sequence of prayer)

 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry,

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears,

the babe in my womb leaped for joy.

And blessed is she who believed

that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Luk 2:1-7

(We do the Sign of the Cross in    Faith,   Hope   and   Love    which both opens and closes the sequence of prayer)

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.

This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

The Presentation - Presentatio

Luk 2:22-35

(We do the Sign of the Cross in    Faith,   Hope   and   Love    which both opens and closes the sequence of prayer)

And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word;

for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel.”

And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him;  and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

“Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel,

and for a sign that is spoken against that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.”

The finding in the Temple - Inventio in Templo

Luk 2:41-52

(We do the Sign of the Cross in    Faith,   Hope   and   Love    which both opens and closes the sequence of prayer)

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.

His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him,

“Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.”

And he said to them,

“How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

They did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.

Our Father (still on the single Pearl, soon moving along the Chain towards the ten Pearls)

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Pater noster, qui es in caelis:

sanctificetur Nomen Tuum;

adveniat Regnum Tuum;

fiat voluntas Tua,

Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie;

et dimitte nobis debita nostra,

Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;

et ne nos inducas in tentationem;

sed libera nos a malo.

Amen

Let's pray (for our Shepherds):

In the Name of Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and all the Saints, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with mercy upon the people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her spouse, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, in Thy mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of the Holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen

O Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, for the Holy Father and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

O Holy Mother of Priests, protect all priests from the dangers of their holy profession and lead the stray cardinals, bishops and priests who have failed their sublime vocation, with your kind motherly hand, back to the good shepherd! Amen

Let us pray for our Holy Father – Pope Francis I - and his eternal soul and pray for the Popes Raccolta intentions:

May the Lord preserve him and give him life and make him to be blessed upon the earth and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

May Thy hand be upon Thine holy servant and upon Thy son whom Thou hast anoited.

Lord Jesus, shelter our Holy Father the Pope under the protection of Thy Sacred Heart.

Be Thou his light, his strength and his consolation.

Amen

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen
